Founded on November 22, 1991, on the second anniversary of President René Moawad’s assassination, the René Moawad Foundation (RMF) commemorates the legacy of a leader who, elected as President of the Lebanese Republic on November 5, 1989, tragically lost his life just 17 days later. René Moawad is remembered for his unwavering belief in the unity of the Lebanese people and his active pursuit of civil peace, dialogue, national unity, and the equality of all Lebanese citizens. The initiative to establish the foundation emerged from the late President’s spouse, former Minister of Social Affairs, and MP, Nayla Moawad. Collaborating with other prominent members of Lebanese civil society, they sought to create a foundation inspired by and dedicated to the principles championed by President René Moawad throughout his life. Over the past 33 years, RMF has been dedicated to the development and enhancement of the Lebanese society. The foundation’s efforts encompass various areas, including education, economic empowerment, social and healthcare provision, and the promotion of democratic values within marginalized and vulnerable communities across Lebanon.

From its humble beginnings as a grassroots organization, the René Moawad Foundation has evolved into a widely respected and nationally recognized NGO. It actively collaborates with numerous national and international institutions and organizations, contributing to the pursuit of a more peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Lebanon. (Despite its growth and evolution) RMF remains steadfast in its commitment to its founding principles, honoring and preserving the memory of President René Moawad, whose vision for a better Lebanon continues to inspire.
